Guilhem P. Baeza

I am a materials scientist specializing in polymer-based systems and nanocomposites. I earned my PhD from the University of Montpellier in 2013 and my Habilitation in 2022. After serving as a Maître de Conférences (Associate Professor) at INSA Lyon from 2016 to 2024, I joined the IMP laboratory at the University Jean Monnet of Saint-Etienne as a Full Professor. My research explores polymer physics and magnetic hyperthermia, often combining rheology, scattering techniques, and low-field NMR. Outside the lab, I am the proud father of two daughters and a passionate enthusiast of chess and Mediterranean geography.

Magnetic Hyperthermia in Polymer-Based Systems
Rheo-Induction setupWe investigate magnetic hyperthermia in phase-transition polymer-based systems to understand the mechanisms responsible for heating beyond magnetic hysteresis losses. We focus on identifying translational and rotational motion using X-ray scattering, microscopy, and tomography, which we correlate with the rheological response. Our Rheo-Induction setup combines shear and alternating magnetic fields to study flow and heating in situ. SAXS-Induction experiments at the ESRF reveal structural and dynamical transitions, which we correlate with temperature variations recorded by an IR camera. This work also supports polymer repair and smoothing after 3D printing for advanced material applications.

Nanocomposites and Chain Dynamics
Nanocomposite investigationWe study various nanocomposites, including rubber-based and canonical attractive systems where polymers interact favorably with fillers. We focus on filler structure and polymer chain dynamics at interfaces using dielectric spectroscopy, rheology, and low-field NMR. Differences observed with various probes provide insights into the nature of chain relaxation mechanisms. Beyond fundamental understanding, this knowledge helps optimize material performance, particularly in rubber applications.

Hybrid Gels and Biobased Polymers
Hybrid gelsWe investigate hybrid gels based on biobased polymers such as polysaccharides and proteins, sometimes containing inorganic nanoparticles like carbon black or silica. Rheology, X-ray, and neutron scattering are used to probe structure-property relationships, while water mobility provides crucial insights into gel organization. Clear correlations with rheological properties help us study ageing and phase transitions in thermo-sensitive hydrogels. Current work targets oleogels within magnetic hyperthermia studies.

Colloidal Pastes for 3D Printing
Colloidal pastesWe study colloidal pastes for SLA 3D printing, focusing on their structure and rheological properties to improve the full process chain, including scraping, debinding, and sintering. Formulations, including plasticizers, photoinitiators, monomers of various functionalities, and nanoparticles, are adapted and studied systematically to provide general insights for the community.

Multi-block Copolymers Physics
Multi-block copolymersWe explore multi-block copolymers to understand how block composition and chain topology influence mechanical and rheological properties. Both quiescent and flow-induced crystallization have been studied in depth and modeled theoretically. Molecular dynamics simulations support predictions on mechanical and structural behavior. Within magnetic hyperthermia studies, nanoparticles selectively adsorbing on certain blocks are used to control phase separation. These strategies allow precise tuning of properties for advanced material design.
